Private İmperial Hospital Orthopedics and Traumatology Specialist Opr. Dr. Yusuf Aşık stated that incorrect posture triggers scoliosis especially in children and young people, and said, “The reason for this is that our children usually sit at a desk and work in a crooked, turned-back position as a result of positional disorders.”

Aşık, who drew attention to the fact that while staying in the same position for a long time while busy with the phone, one side of the muscles gets stronger while the other side gets weaker, noted that this causes curvatures in the spine.

Aşık, who noted that they started to see scoliosis more frequently in children and young people, said, “We started to see scoliosis more frequently in young people, especially children. It does not mean that it is more common among general patients. There has been an increase compared to the previous ones. The reason for this is that our children usually sit at a desk and stand crooked, turned-back in front of the computer and the positional disorders occur. While staying in the same position for a long time while busy with the phone, one side of the muscles gets stronger while the other side gets weaker. Therefore, this posture causes curvatures in the spine. Of course, there is a congenital side, there are other factors, but we attribute the increase to them more in this way,” he said. Drawing attention to the fact that a bag constantly carried on the same side causes curvatures in the spine, Aşık said, “For a while, we don’t care about the weight of a kilogram when children who go to school carry bags on one shoulder, young women hang bags on one arm, but that one kilogram is very important. Because when you hang the bag on the shoulder, we try to maintain balance so that it doesn’t fall from the shoulder. When you try to maintain balance, you disrupt the balance of the body. The weight of a bag always carried on the same side is not important, it causes curvatures in the spine. We have started to see these more frequently, especially in young people. It is said that this has become the disease of this age, time will show that. We definitely don’t want our children who are in front of the computer and studying to sit sideways on the chair and work facing the table. We want them to be completely in front of the screen and their notebooks and books while studying. When sitting on the chair, we want the chair to be low and close to the table so that they stand upright. Otherwise, they lean forward, which causes the hunchback we call kyphosis. Similarly, we see these disorders in adults. Especially those who work in banks, those who have desk jobs, teachers, such people have already decreased their movements due to the pandemic, their muscles have weakened, and if we add such negative factors, the complaints increase even more. These do not only cause pain, they also cause degeneration in the bones due to that position. In addition to the current pain, it will cause an increase in degenerative diseases in the spine in the future. This is a bigger problem, more difficult to solve,” he said.
