Prof. Dr. Fazıl Aydın: “There is no data to suggest that people who have had Covid have a higher risk of cancer”
Noting that people have lost contact with hospitals in the last two years due to the pandemic, and therefore Covid has caused a delay in the diagnosis of cancer patients, Aydın said, “There is a relative increase in cancer rates all over the world. Currently, cancer is second only to cardiovascular diseases among the diseases that cause the most deaths in the world, but in the next 15-20 years, cancer is seen as the disease that causes the most deaths all over the world. Diagnostic opportunities are increasing, diagnostic opportunities are increasing, people's communication with doctors is increasing, this is a factor in the increase in cancer cases. Another factor is the increase in carcinogens. Cancer risk factors are increasing. The negative effects of people's environment on cancer are increasing. Therefore, there is an increase in cancer, but this is the same situation not only in the Eastern Black Sea region, but all over the world. There is no relationship between Covid and Covid increasing cancer, this has not been shown. What happened is; During the Covid pandemic, people's communication with hospitals was cut off in the last two years. Covid caused a delay in the diagnosis of cancer patients. In other words, people could not go to doctors and hospitals due to fear of Covid, this caused a delay in cancer diagnoses to some extent, and caused treatments to be interrupted. There is no data that those who have Covid will have cancer or those who have Covid have a higher risk of cancer,” he said.
The most common cancers in the Eastern Black Sea Region are breast and lung cancer
Aydın, who drew attention to the fact that the most common cancers in the Eastern Black Sea Region are breast and lung cancer, said, “The cancer types we encounter in the Eastern Black Sea Region, as in all parts of the world, are breast cancer, lung cancer is in second place. Lung cancer was the most common cancer in the world, but after the nineties, lung cancer fell to second place after breast cancer as a result of the very effective fight against smoking. In our region, in addition to these two cancers, stomach cancer, colorectal cancer, intestinal cancers, and thyroid cancers are among the most common cancers.”
